Uruguay fans have been blessed to have witnessed some of the best strikers of the modern game playing for The Los Charrúas La Celeste. At present Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani are holding on to their positions as the first choice strikers but a 23-year old Diego Rolan is making steady progress to make his claim for a place in Uruguay national team.

Having already played 17 times for his country, Rolan could be a wildcard for Uruguay at the 2018 World Cup. After an impressive Ligue 1 campaign with Bordeaux, we take a closer look at Diego Rolan’s playing style, weaknesses and future prospects as a professional footballer.

Diego Rolan – A brief history

Diego Alejandro Rolan Silva, briefly known as Diego Rolan was born in Uruguay’s capital Montevideo on March 24, 1993. Rolan made his name at Uruguay’s Defensor Sporting team in 2011 and steadily evolved as a professional footballer.

In his first season the striker played in 26 games and scored three goals. It was in 2013, when his first European break came with French side Bordeaux signed him in €3million deal. In his very first season with the Ligue 1 side, he scored 8 goals.

Since then, Rolan has managed to score 23 times in 84 appearances. Uruguay national team was quick to spot his talents and gave him a debut at the age of 21. Since then he has scored 4 goals for his country and promises to be the next big striker for Uruguay.

Diego Rolan – Style of play and strengths

Diego Rolan has an eye for goal which is backed by his incredible speed and dribbling abilities. Rolan’s athleticism allows him to run up and down throughout the 90 minutes and be a real thorn to opposition’s defense.

Being a striker, Rolan has worked on his shooting abilities which now makes him a threat from both outside as well as inside the box. Another key aspect of Rolan’s play is to create space for others and look for an assist if he is not in a good position.

He is physically strong which allows him to fend off defenders with ease and run with the ball at pace. Given his pace and strength, Rolan is a threat on the counter attacks for his teams.

Diego Rolan – Weaknesses to be worked upon

The 23-year old striker is always looking to do his best and has been an avid player for last 12-18 months. However, from time to time he goes on to be lost during the games. For long periods you would not see him on the ball and when he gets the ball, he ends up picking wrong passes.

Despite having all the abilities to be a regular goal-scorer, he misses chances far more than his manager’s liking. He is still young and by playing alongside Suarez and Cavani, he will definitely work on that facet of his game as well.

Diego Rolan – What does the future hold?

Rolan is currently playing for Bordeaux but somehow he gets constantly linked with a move to Fenerbahce and West Brom. Newcastle were also linked with a January move for Rolan but it did not materialize for the Uruguayan International.

A summer move looks on the cards for Diego Rolan, however, the quality of his next team would depend on how well he manages to finish the 2015/16 season with his current team Bordeaux.
