Fabian Schar

Fabian Schar could finally be heading to Britain this summer. But, with Celtic and Newcastle United both linked with a  move for the Swiss International centre-back, discussions now will be directed towards the club better suited for Schar.

According to The Mail, Rafa Benitez wants to reinforce his defence and has set his sight on Schar. The former Basel and Hoffenheim centre-back has a release clause of just £3.5 million after his Deportive side suffered relegation from La Liga – meaning even Newcastle can easily fund his transfer.

This comes a few weeks after El Desmarque suggested that Celtic were interested in the 42 capped international. At £3.5 million, they too possess the funds to sign Schar, particularly after the addition of funds from the sale of Stuart Armstrong to their coffers.

The strong appeal of the Premier League is clear, meaning Newcastle could be the most enticing option to the player. The chance to be tutored by a coach as highly regarded as Benitez, and play at the famous St. James’ Park, will also appeal.

Celtic, however, can offer Champions League football – they qualify – and a fighting chance for a trophy for the first time since his departure from Basel since three years ago.

And, while the 26-year-old would likely be a backup at Newcastle with Jamaal Lascelles and Florian Lejeune established as the Magpies starting pair, he has better chance to break through to the first team at Celtic as the Scottish side lack quality centre-halves.

This is without mentioning Schar’s modern, ball-playing style; something that makes him a perfect fit for Brendan Rodgers rather than Benitez, whose tactics are a little more pragmatic than purist.
