Manchester United kick start their pre-season with a 2-0 win and some notable performances

Manchester United have been the most talked about team in Europe this summer following Jose Mourinho’s appointment and the arrivals for Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

Rumours of Paul Pogba joining the club aren’t going away anytime soon making it the most memorable transfer window for United fans since Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure.

Mourinho’s new looked United side took to field for the first time today when they played against Wigan at DW Stadium. The end result saw United run away with a 2-0 win as youngsters Will Keane and Andreas Perreira were on the scoresheet.

However, more than the win it was the individual displays from Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Eric Bailly, Ander Herrera and Jesse Lingard which won over the United fans.

These players looked part of the Mourinho’s set up and were comfortable throughout their time on the pitch. Bailly seemed like more than just a defender as he was very comfortable on the ball.

Mkhitaryan was at his very best tonight

Mkhitaryan in particular was unplayable at times with his smart runs in the box and trickery to go past defenders. He was hooked in the second half for Juan Mata, who delivered a reasonable performance including a sharp assist for Keane’s opening goal.

Mata looked aware and vibrant which can only be a good sign given the constant rumours of him being linked with a move away from Old Trafford. Overall, Mourinho must have been a pleased man with the result as he got the win, kept the clean sheet and some bright moments from his players.

Based on tonight’s game, Memphis Depay and Daley Blind would need to do whole lot more to force their way in to Mourinho’s starting XI next season. As for Luke Shaw’s return to professional football, he never looked like missing a beat as he was in imperious form throughout the night.
