Louis Van Gaal has weathered the strongest storm of protest from his own fans to continue in charge of the club. Although not many would agree with club’s decision to stick with the Dutchman, there could yet be a substantial reason for United board to trust Van Gaal.

Manchester United’s record against the Top 6 under LVG

lvg firedWhen Louis Van Gaal took over back in August 2014, United were coming on the back of defeats against Chelsea, Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool under David Moyes.

Truth be told, United have looked a different side while playing the bigger teams under Van Gaal. Barring the 3-0 defeat to Arsenal, Van Gaal has often handled his team well when there has been a top6 clash, as shown by the picture above.

Since Aug 2014, United have scored most number of points (29) in top6 Premier League encounters. The latest of those wins came against Liverpool, when a Wayne Rooney goal settled the match.

Till now, Van Gaal has only been humiliated by Arsenal in that highly impressive 3-0 win which Dutchman got all wrong by playing Bastian Schweinsteiger in an advanced role.

Add to that, the infamous 1-0 defeat against Chelsea is still hurting Van Gaal, as he believes that United played most of the ball and Chelsea walked away with points.

Needless to say, United manager has something under his belt to show for his time at Old Trafford. It may not be enough for United fans to be excited about, but it has given the Dutchman some breathing space, at least for now.
