Once tipped to be the next big midfield star at Manchester United, Nick Powell has slowly faded away in recent times and it has largely been down to his lack of appetite for the game. Sir Alex Ferguson had tipped Powell to eventually succeed Paul Scholes in Manchester United’s midfield, however, 3 years on, and the 21-year old does not even own a spot in Van Gaal’s playing XI.
Powell was signed from FC Crewe for £4million and the investment looked to have been a real good one when he scored from distance on his Premier League debut against Wigan in a 4-0 win. Since then, Powell’s career has been marred with injuries, lack of focus and unprofessional behavior.
According to Sunday Mirror, Powell is intentionally running down his current contract at Manchester United so that he can easily leave in January. After recovering from his knee injury, Powell enjoyed a successful loan spell with Wigan Athletic, scoring 12 times in 41 appearances.
Since that point on, he has lost interest in playing for Manchester United or for that matter any other club. Last season, Van Gaal played Powell in a 4-0 humiliating defeat against MK Dons and subsequently loaned him out to Leicester City on the Transfer deadline day. Then Leicester manager Nigel Pearson just played him in 3 professional games and decided to cut short his loan stay as he was disappointed with Powell’s attitude.
Cut to January 2015 and Powell was once again a Manchester United player, however, he continued to have same attitude problem and has been rightly dropped by Louis Van Gaal since then. Since returning from his loan spell, Powell is yet to play a single game for the club. It is believed that, he will be allowed to leave on a free transfer, which is just sad for professional football to see a talented player like him throw away the chance, which many could only dream of having.
