Premier League is going through their last International break of the season with just 8 weeks remaining until we crown the new Champions of England. While footballing debates are on hold for now, it gives us time to highlight other aspects from the most unpredictable season ever.
Next up, we take a look at the best Premier League signing of the season. As expected, there have been plenty of names being thrown in the mix with Dimitri Payet and N’Golo Kante leading the charts.
However, I could not help but think the contribution of Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld since his move from Atletico Madrid earlier in the summer. The Belgian was signed for £11million ahead of Mauricio Pochettino’s former side Southampton.
Since his move to White Hart Lane, Alderweireld has not missed a single minute of Premier League action and has been instrumental in marshaling a historically fragile Spurs defense. Over the years, Tottenham were known to be a shaky defensive unit who managed to concede crucial goals in big games.
However, this season has been nothing but stability and determination in defense for Tottenham. Pochettino’s side have conceded the fewest goals in all of English football with Toby Alderweireld being right at the heart of Spurs’ defensive shield.
With 51 interceptions, 24 blocks and 241 clearances in 31 matches show Alderweireld’s impeccable reading of the game. He never rushes in to diving or making an early tackle. He waits till the very last moment to make sure he gets the attacker on his wrong side and then tackles him to either win the possession back or stop the ongoing attack.
The Belgian defender may not have scored wonderful free kick goals like Payet or he may not have been a bundle of energy running up and down the 90 minutes like Kante, but with his leadership and commanding presence for Tottenham, Toby Alderweireld is our choice for the the best Premier League signing of the season.
