Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has stressed how important it is to keep hold of Dedryck Boyata at the club as the Belgian’s contract runs down.

Boyata, who appeared in all three of the Red Devils’ World Cup group games, is into the final year of his current deal at Parkhead.

The 27-year-old is yet to return from summer break as he recovers post-Russia.

Boyata has been made aware Celtic would like him to remain with them, though, and talks will go on till he returns to Scotland.

Rodgers, who confirmed Tom Rogic will be absent for Wednesday’s second leg against Alashkert, said: “I’ve always said that once he got into the team, he done very, very well.

“He’s an experienced player now and his experience at the World Cup will only benefit him.

“He’s got a year left, he’s a player we’d love to keep, he knows that, but naturally, he’s now on holiday, he’ll be relaxing and we’ll pick that up when he gets back.

“He needs to rest and recover but we’ll speak when he gets back.”
