It is about time Louis Van Gaal does something about his decision to name Wayne Rooney as the Manchester United’s captain. So far this season, Rooney has been United’s worst player making Van Gaal’s decision a very bad one. It is down to Rooney’s captaincy that he is still in the starting lineup week-in-week-out and it is hurting the club big time.
There are obvious choices for the Dutch manager to fall back on. The likes of Chris Smalling and Bastian Schweinsteiger have played very well this season, and make a very strong case to be named as the next Manchester United captain. Not surprisingly, United fans agree with the notion and have expressed their views on twitter, take a look:
This cannot go down well for Rooney after his own fans are turning against him. But he has done very little to justify his position in the team let alone being the skipper for Van Gaal. With Rooney being in the side, it is not allowing Juan Mata to play in the central areas. If Rooney was to sit out of games, Mata would slot in behind the striker with Memphis and Jesse Lingard attacking from the wide areas.
With these little tweaks, United’s play going forward becomes even more efficient. Rooney has been a loyal servant for Manchester United over the years but it is time for the club to look beyond the former Everton man and take decisions to improve their performance this season.
