Manchester United’s plans of signing Atletico Madrid star Saul Niguez were delivered a big blow after the 21-year old star pledged to stay at Vicente Calderon for coming seasons, according to The Sun.

Saul enjoyed a breakthrough last season under Diego Simeone after the crafty playmaker played a crucial role in Rojiblancos’ Champions League final run. Saul had scored a wonderful goal against Bayern Munich knocking them out at the semifinal stage.

After his impressive performances, Saul was linked with a move to Manchester United where he was guaranteed a first team role by Jose Mourinho.

Despite Saul’s current contract running until 2021, United were contemplating a £54million bid for the player, however, those plans need to be revisited after he snubbed a chance to move to Old Trafford this summer.

Speaking with The Sun, Saul said: “I’m fine in Madrid, I play often and I’m happy. Atletico is the club where I intend to stay. Simeone? We all want him to stay.

“Now I have to work hard with Atletico because sooner or later my chance will come,” the Atletico midfielder added.”

These words have effectively put an end to Saul to Man United rumours for now as the player is keen to establish himself under Simeone in coming seasons.

It could have been the perfect summer for Saul had he been selected for Spain’s Euro 2016 squad, however, Vicente Del Bosque snubbed the 21-year old in favor of his teammate Koke and other midfield stars.
