Dedryck Boyata has a good chance of being part of the Belgium team that plays at the World Cup, and HLN report his chances have increased thanks to Vincent Kompany’s fitness situation.
The Manchester City defender began to have fitness issues over the weekend and given his history with injuries, he has become a doubt for the World Cup. Boyata played alongside Kompany at City before moving to Celtic, and HLN point out the close relationship between the two.
That’s why Boyata’s statement of wanting Kompany to be fit enough to participate in the World Cup is considered coming straight from his heart, rather than the usual footballer guff.
Celtic’s defender came on for Belgium in the second-half against Portugal, as Kompany left the field. There’s a chance the 27-year-old could continue playing the position for Belgium, depending on what happens with the City captain.
Playing well after coming on, the Celtic defender is quoted by HLN as saying: “Of course it can always be better, I’m a perfectionist.”
With a contract ending in June 2019, negotiations have reportedly commenced for a new deal, Brendan Rodgers will hope Boyata excels at the World Cup, but perhaps not so well that it brings club in to disrupt those talks.
