The Croatian playmaker joined the Inter from Dinamo Zagreb in 2010, and was being touted for big things in Roberto Mancini’s plans, but is set to complete a staggering €35million move to the Santiago Bernabeau.
The 21-year-old midfield schemer was long linked with a move to England with Liverpool, but reportedly saw a £17 million offer turned down by the Nerazzurri. And the Spanish giants have seen off competition from any possible suitors with the huge offer.
Kovacic was along-term for Premier League giants Liverpool and Manchester United. According to Italian reports, Anfield sode were set for a meeting with the player and his agents next week but an overnight ambush from Real Madrid has meant that the Croatian will now join Los Blancos on a multi-year contract.
Kovacic had spoken of his disappointment at Inter’s lack of success and silverware but nonetheless ‘felt at home’
“When I joined Inter, I was hoping to win trophies. I arrived here two-and-a-half years ago and I think I have been waiting for quite a while now.”
“But I am happy at Inter. It feels like home. That’s why I don’t like to talk about a transfer.
“Next season will be important. I am 21 years old now and I want to make an impact,” he told Corriere dello Sport.
He also had squashed speculation linking him with the Spanish big two, claiming Inter are as big as them.
“I want to show that I deserve to be at Inter, I want to win with this shirt. Inter are like Real Madrid or Barcelona,”
“I want to stay here. I will not move… the relationship between Inter and me will be a long one.”
“The club have never told me they want to sell me.”
The move will also see Kovacic unite with his compatriot Luka Modric at the Bernaneau, and provide competition to Toni Kroos, Isco and the Croatia international in the creative midfield berth.
