Celtic’s official Twitter account has wished Cristian Gamboa good luck ahead of Costa Rica’s friendly against the North of Ireland.

The defender only played three games during Celtic’s double treble-winning campaign but is heading to Russia with his national team for the World Cup finals.

A year ago the former West Brom defender chose to participate in the Gold Cup rather than prepare for Celtic’s Champions League qualifying campaign.

The decision seemed to put an end to his hoops career with Brendan Rodgers choosing to use Tony Ralston as a back up to Mikael Lustig.

An appearance at the World Cup finals will take the 28-year-old farther away from the picture with the Irishman as he prepares for another attempt at getting to the group stage of the Champions League.

Costa Rica commences their World Cup campaign against Serbia on June 17 before going on to face Brazil and Switzerland in Group E.
