Arsenal have been linked with a shock move for Manchester United central defender Phil Jones following their failed attempts to sign Valencia’s Shkodran Mustafi, as per the latest reports.
According to Evening Standard, Gunners have been priced out of a deal for Mustafi after Valencia have put a staggering £50million price tag on the German defender.
With just 7 days left in the transfer window, Arsenal are now turning towards their last resorts with Phil Jones emerging as the potential option.
Earlier today, Sky Sports Presenter Kaveh Solhekol confirmed that Arsenal actually had a £16million bid accepted by Blackburn back in 2011 but Jones decided to join Manchester United instead.
Five years on, Gunners are once again hopeful of signing Jones following Jose Mourinho’s squad overhaul at Old Trafford. Jones is likely to struggle to get playing time this season with Eric Bailly and Daley Blind forging a strong partnership at the back for United.
Chris Smalling has returned from his injury scare and United are also linked with Southampton’s Jose Fonte as well. That may push Jones and Marcos Rojo out of the club with Arsenal hopeful to get the deal done in time.
Chances of Jones signing for Arsenal – 2/5
Had Louis Van Gaal been in charge of Manchester United, I would have seen some merit in this deal but with Jose Mourinho in charge, I suppose Gunner faithfuls must forget about this bit of transfer business and keep looking elsewhere for their defensive recruit this summer.
