Memphis needs to learn from Wilfried Zaha and Yannick Bolasie

Manchester United’s £25million signing Memphis Depay was brought expecting immediate impact at the club, however, The Dutchman has flattered to deceive so far with plenty of below the par performances. So much so, Memphis has been left out the starting XI by Louis Van Gaal in recent weeks, further piling up the misery on former PSV man.

One aspect which has led Memphis down so far has been his intention of doing too much with the ball. He has been seen trying flicks, tricks and many things over the ball at once. Instead of giving positive result, it has further disintegrated his game this season. Playing from the wing, Memphis perhaps needs to learn the direct approach from his fellow Premier League wingers.

Did Manchester United make a mistake by selling Zaha?

Memphis needs to learn from Wilfried Zaha and Yannick Bolasie

When we talk about Premier League wingers going direct, Crystal Palace duo Wilfried Zaha and Yannick Bolasie immediately come to mind. These two men are perhaps the most direct ones in terms of taking on opposing full backs and creating chances from the wings. Zaha and Bolasie combined, have forced 62 take-ons as compared to only 11 from Memphis.

Memphis is often caught between two minds of running at the defenders and cutting inside to have a shot. It is about time, he develops clarity in his mind and plays the type of game which will make Manchester United an irresistible force in Premier League. The only thing lacking right now in United’s play is a direct play from left-wing. Having seen Memphis drift away, Jesse Lingard has occupied that slot after Anthony Martial was given a free run in that position.

One can only imagine the level of consistency and threat Manchester United will have going forward if Memphis can sort out his play from the left wing. He certainly has the potential to be one of the finest players from the modern era, it’s just the execution which is lacking at the moment. With Van Gaal and Ryan Giggs working closely with the player, one would expect to see the very best from 21-year old in coming weeks.
