Manchester United 1 Liverpool 1 – Key Talking Points and Things we Learned

Manchester United’s Europa League dreams were smashed by a spirited Liverpool performance which saw Philippe Coutinho earn a draw after his wonderful solo goal. It was always going to be a tough game for Louis Van Gaal given the first leg’s 2-0 deficit, but he made it even tougher with his team selections.

Van Gaal opted to start with Jesse Lingard in the number 10 role ahead of Juan Mata. The decision left United craving for creativity in the final third and it allowed Liverpool to come back in to the game despite a positive start by the Red Devils.

As for Liverpool, they stood by their task and got the job done with a 3-1 aggregate win over their arch rivals. On the wake of full-time result at Old Trafford, we take a look at key talking point and things learned after Man United got knocked out of Europa League by their bitter rivals.

Louis Van Gaal’s list of blunder goes on and on

The Dutchman made two calls which rightly irritated United fans the most tonight. Playing Marouane Fellaini makes United handicapped from the start and then to go ahead and experiment with Lingard’s positioning was uncalled for.

Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial were making decent runs, but it needed Mata’s accurate passing, instead it was Lingard, and it did not look right for the young star or for Manchester United.

Philippe Coutinho is magical, when on song

There is a reason why Coutinho is adored by the Liverpool supporters, and he showed to us yet again with a wonderful solo goal vs. David De Gea.

He was helped by Varela’s poor defending, but the calmness in going past his man and dinking it over the best keeper in Premier League took some doing and he did in some style.

On form, Coutinho is one of the best playmakers in the league right now, if not the best.

Daley Blind’s criticisms should end right away

At present, Blind is Manchester United’s best option to play alongside Chris Smalling in central defense. His eye for a pass in impeccable, and he has looked sharp while defending as well.

Blind’s presence in the defense allows United to be calm at the back, and its high time United fans accept him as their own and more importantly as a defender.

Liverpool aren’t good enough to win Europa League

Being torn apart in first half by an undercooked Manchester United side showed us a side of Jurgen Klopp’s team which is not yet ready to be a Europa League winning team.

To win against better teams on two legs would take a special performance from Klopp’s team, which they are not capable of at present.

Memphis is being wasted by Van Gaal

Louis Van Gaal is making some strange calls at United at the moment, one of them is to sabotage Memphis Depay’s run at Old Trafford. Memphis has played his best football in recent weeks, but he has been benched far too often for his liking.

Getting benched on a regular basis would shatter his confidence, and he could turn out to be the next Angel Di Maria.
