Make no mistakes about it, what Leicester have achieved this season may never be replicated in decades or even generations to follow. They were the perennial underdogs this season widely tipped to go down and suffer a humiliating campaign under Claudio Ranieri.
But the manner in which The Foxes went about their season has left everyone surprised and pleased. Not only that, with their unprecedented title win Leicester have changed the very landscape of modern football which we have witnessed in last 3-4 decades..
Back in the 70’s and 80’s when teams fought on a level playing field any team was capable of winning the title and it did not come as a surprise to anyone. However, with the money kicking in, Premier League has always been dominated by Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea and lately Manchester City.
To highlight the importance of Leicester’s triumph we just need to know that they are the first new Champions in English top flight’s football after a gap of 38 years. In doing so, they not only they have broken the long-standing hoodoo, they have also set an example for rest of the teams to follow.
No longer any team can now give excuses for not doing well in a season. Every time they seek an excuse, Leicester’s example would be shoved at their faces and will be asked to perform.
Lots and lots of Managers will now feel burdened and envious of what Claudio Ranieri has achieved this season. Teams around Europe would suddenly expect more from their managers after Ranieri’s magical feat with very limited resources.
Having said that, Leicester’s fairy tale journey will also inspire new teams to mount serious challenge at the top end of Premier League table. When the season began back in August, no one expected West Ham and Tottenham to be fighting for top honors this season but they are, and it hints at a new change happening in English football.
With the stupendous TV money coming in next season, teams in the bottom half of Premier League would be able to go to Ajax, PSV, FC Porto, Benfica and take their best players by paying huge sums. Leicester’s success story will pave the way for rest of the teams to try and emulate their feat in coming seasons.
By winning the title ahead of Premier League’s moneybags, Leicester have told everyone in football that nothing is impossible all you need is to dream and then do their best to achieve those dreams by giving their all.
It promises to be an even more competitive campaign next season and perhaps English Football may never be the same again after Ranieri’s “Dilly Dilly Dong Dong” have changed Premier League’s face forever.
