Manchester United may have experienced the best transfer window in the club’s history after The Red Devils signed Paul Pogba, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Eric Bailly for a combined fee of £150m.
Despite their shrewd business in the summer, one player the club missed out on is N’Golo Kante. As per reports from M.E.N (via Goal.com), Kante received a phone call from Mourinho himself about the possibility of a summer switch to Old Trafford.
However the former Leicester star confirmed that by then he had already struck an agreement with Chelsea and despite the lucrative offer from The Red Devils, he chose otherwise and signed for The Blues.
In an interview earlier today, Kante said: “It was amazing to have Mourinho call me, even though I’d been warned before how he would appeal to me.
“I listened to his arguments about why I should move to United.
“But at that time I was hesitant between staying at Leicester or leaving for Chelsea. My discussions with them were already well underway. But when I spoke, I had a good feeling with Conte.”
Kante’s words do reflect towards a possible failure from Man United, but one has to wonder whether Mourinho was eyeing a move for Kante as an alternative to Paul Pogba or if Jose actually wanted to lineup Kante alongside Pogba?
Perhaps we will get some answers next week when Mourinho sits in his pre-match press conference for the game against Manchester City.
