‘The English Iniesta’ – This is how Rene Meulensteen likes to remember Jesse Lingard from his days at Manchester United. For those of you, who are not aware of this person, he was the corner stone at Old Trafford alongside Sir Alex Ferguson in building the successful seasons laden with trophies from 2007-2013.
Former Manchester United first-team coach described Lingard as the English Iniesta and said that he certainly can reach that potential but has a long way to go. Meulensteen said: “I see him as the English version of Iniesta, he has still got a long way to go but that is the sort of player I see in him.”
Perhaps these words should not come as a major surprise after the 22-year old midfielder has really stepped up his game in recent past. Lingard has now started 4 games in a row and has been picked ahead of the £25m summer signing Memphis Depay. Lingard has added a degree of spark and freshness to United’s play going forward and it is indeed high time for the club to reward him with a new deal.
According to M.E.N, Lingard is set to double his wages at Manchester United as he will soon be offered a contract worth £50,000-per-week, which is double of his £25k-per-week contract. Louis Van Gaal was adamant in not sending the 22-year old attacker on loan earlier this summer and the decision is paying great dividend. Lingard is fast becoming a key member for Louis Van Gaal and Manchester United as the season starts to head towards the business end.
