The Hoops claimed their seventh consecutive Scottish Premiership title and retained the Scottish Cup to complete a domestic treble. Rodgers’ side could not find their feet in Europa, losing their qualification to both the Champions League and Europa League. The squad needs to be reinforced if they wish to retain their title and improve their performance in Europe.

The defence will be a major concern for the Northern Irishman and he will be ready to tackle it. Celtic lack true leadership at the back that can make a difference. With that in mind, one man who could provide a solution to his problem is Liverpool defender – Joel Matip.

The Cameroonian joined the Reds from Schalke as a free agent in 2016 and initially made a great start to life at Anfield. However, he has struggled for a consistent run and with injuries with which has seen fall down the pecking order. Virgil van Dijk’s arrival at the Merseyside club meant Matip was no longer a guaranteed starter. If the club signs another centre-back, he could head for the exit doors.

Valued at £22.5m by Transfermarkt, he could be a great signing for Celtic if they convince him to come to Parkhead. He is a towering presence at the back and shows elegance on the ball. He would add a touch of the class of the class to the side and fit right into Rodgers style of play.
