Given the lack of Champions League next season and where Manchester United are placed at the moment, signing anyone of these three stars may come as a wishful thinking for them. However, with proposed changes on the horizon, we may see this fairy tale become a reality.
At present, Zlatan Ibrahimovic looks the most likely to arrive at Old Trafford, which is largely dependent on Jose Mourinho becoming the next Manchester United manager. However, some quarters of the United fan-base believe Ibra’s age is a cause of concern.
It may have sounded as a wise claim had United been either Champions of England or be playing in Champions League next season. But without either of those accolades at their disposal, they might want to refer to the old-age phrase – “Beggars can’t be choosers“.
Moving on, United are also linked with a move for Atletico Madrid forward Antoine Griezmann and Borussia Dortmund hitman Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang as well, who are more than capable of leading United’s attack in coming seasons.
With these three options beckoning, the question arises as to who should Manchester United sign this summer? While Zlatan will come on a free transfer, United will have to cough-up a large chunk of money to get Griezmann or Aubameyang.
Stats Comparison: Griezmann vs Ibrahimovic vs Aubameyang
These stats indicate at just one thing – sign Ibra, and sign him now. His numbers are unreal for a striker of his age. Zlatan managed 38 goals and 13 assists this season and continues to defy the law of age.
Shifting our focus from the Demigod to the lesser mortals, Griezmann is arguably the more complete player of this exciting lot. He is currently playing as the number 10 or right sided attacker in a 4-3-3 formation.
And if we see United’s attacking options these days, their right wing is the weakest link. Jesse Lingard has the speed, but lacks awareness and incisiveness. Whereas Juan Mata has everything but falls short in terms of pace going forward.
Griezmann has scored 22 league goals and further 7 in Champions League this season. He is equally comfortable playing as the lead striker or playing in support of the front man, which makes him an ideal signing for any top side in Europe, let alone Manchester United.
Now comes the final player in our feature who is known for his exceptional pace and finishing abilities. Aubameyang can hurt any defense with his direct runs, much like we have seen from Leicester’s Jamie Vardy this season.
His bursting runs in the box have seen him score 25 league goals while further 8 in Europa League. He is a natural finisher which is seen from the fact that all of his goals have come from inside the box.
He is an intelligent attacker who can sense the movement from his supporting players and can mould his runs accordingly. Aubameyang can be a real asset specially with Wayne Rooney now playing in a deeper role and playing some delicious balls over the top of opposing defenses.
Verdict – With all due respect to the analogy of United fans criticizing Ibrahimovic’s move to Old Trafford, Swedish International is the best option Manchester United have of re-claiming their lost honor and pride.
In an ideal world signing Ibrahimovic on a free transfer and going bonkers to bring Griezmann to Old Trafford would have been the best possible deal for Manchester United. But we do not live in the ideal world, do we?
However, if United somehow manage to scupper the deal for Zlatan Ibrahimovic, then their next best option should be Atletico Madrid forward Antoine Griezmann as he is the ideal man to operate from United’s attack in either right hand side or to be their leading striker.
