France do not look like a team worthy of being Euro 2016 Champions

I am not the only one who has been disappointed with the way France have gone about their task at Euro 2016. With backing of the home teams, many (including me) had picked Les Blues as the tournament favorites, however, after the couple of matches I am beginning to have my doubts.

Be it the lack of competitive matches in last two years or the utter failure of Didier Deschamps in first picking his squad and then failing to understand his starting XI, France are clearly far from hitting their top form. The team is way too reliant on Dimitri Payet to bail them out of tough situations.

Following a lucky and a late win over Albania on the opening night, French team were pushed to the limits by Albania last night. France did manage to score two late goals on the night but the performance was way below par.

Match Stats – France vs Albania

France Euro 2016 Stats may show 22 attempts on goal by the French team but they could only manager two shots on target with first coming in 83rd minute from Antoine Griezmann’s headed goal. Going in to the game, France needed a win to guarantee them a round of 16 spot. Despite knowing the fact, Deschamps decided to drop both Paul Pogba and Griezmann.

Anthony Martial was given a start and he played relatively well but was then hooked at half time to bring on Pogba. These novice and rather forced decisions from the French manager may end up being his undoing at Euro 2016.

He can very well turn back and say that his team have won both games in the competition so far, but the manner in which it has been done is not very commendable. With the squad they have, we all expected them to come out of the group stage as one of the best teams in competition, however, there are more questions than positives for France at the moment.

With knockout stage beckoning for the hosts, it would either require Deschamps to get his acts right or France to get their rhythm back in order to progress further at Euro 2016. At this moment, only Payet seems to be the capable man to guide France to a victory, however, a bad day for him against a tougher opponent could bring an end to France’s dreams of winning their third major honor as the hosts.
