Despite having Jozo Simunovic, Dedryck Boyata, Jack Hendry, Kristoffer Ajer, Marvin Compper and even Nir Bitton at their beck and call, most Celtic fans would argue that their side needs to acquire the services of a new centre-back this summer.

So what about Steven Caulker?

A former England international defender, Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers knows Caulker very well from his impressive loan spell at Swansea City back in the 2011-12 season.

And the Northern Irish manager indicated last summer that he might have an interest in reuniting with the former Tottenham Hotspur youngster, describing him as an “awesome talent”. Now, it seems Rodgers has been presented with an opportunity to do just that.

According to the Scottish Sun, Caulker has doubt hanging over his future at Dundee United after less than half a season at Dens Park. It is claimed that the 26-year-old was sent home from the club’s pre-season training camp and manager Neil McCann now has to decide his future.

But should Celtic capitalize on this opportunity to make a move? Caulker has now proved himself in the top division of Scottish football having made waves at Dundee and, if Rodgers could coax the sort of form that he showed at Swansea, the 6ft 3ins powerhouse has the potential and talent to secure a place in Celtic’s starting XI.

According to The Mirror, Celtic held talks with Caulker about a transfer to Glasgow last summer and it will be interesting to see their reaction to his uncertain future at Dundee.
