Newcastle United and Celtic are set to compete for Uruguayan playmaker Georgian de Arrascaeta who plies his trade with Brazilian side Cruzeiro, according to recent reports.
Arrascaeta’s career took off in Uruguay playing for Defensor Sporting Club. Arrascaeta played 65 games for Defensor Sporting Club, in which time he found the net 18 times and provided 17 assists.
This drew the attention of his current club Cruzeiro who acquired his service in January of 2015 for a fee in the region of £3.6 million.
Arrascaeta has since recorded 90 appearances for Cruzeiro during which he picked up 20 goals and 13 assists.
Arrascaeta was also taken to the 2018 World Cup by Uruguay. He played two games for Egypt and Russia and his impressive performance have made him a transfer target for both Newcastle United and Celtic.
When Newcastle United earned their promotion to the Premier League in the 2016-17 season, many thought they would not be able to retain the top tier status due to lack of money spent on their squad.
On the surface, Newcastle does not exactly seem blessed with top Premier League talents. However, Rafa Benitez successfully guided an average Newcastle side to a 10th place finish in the Premier League.
Now, however, given Newcastle finished in an impressive 10th place last term, they will need to reinforce their squad in order to improve on their 2017/18 season and Arrascaeta could well help them achieve that.
