Southampton is expected to make an official announcement regarding the signing of Stuart Armstrong from Celtic in the next 24 hours.

Sky Sports News reported the fee will be £7m, which could increase to £8m with bonuses.

The 26-year-old central midfielder went through medicals on the south coast on Monday and is believed to have agreed to personal terms on a four-year deal. He will be Mark Hughes’ debut signing since his appointment at St Mary’s.

Armstrong, who has been capped six times for Scotland, signed for Celtic from Dundee United in 2015 and aided the club in winning consecutive trebles. He has played 145 games for the Hoops, bagging 28 goals, and committed to a new two-year contract last summer.

Southampton finished one place above the drop zone last term, winning seven of their 38 Premier League fixtures.

They begin their 2018/19 Premier League campaign with a home game against Burnley on August 11 before travelling to Everton a week later.
