Fraser Forster’s days at Southampton seem numbered after the St Mary’s side secured the services of Angus Gunn from Manchester City for £13.5 million.
The former Celtic hero already suffered demotion to the backup goalkeeper with the emergence of Alex McCarthy but it now looks set to fall further down the pecking order, third behind Gunn, next season.
Given the long-term contract he is running, it is likely Southampton will look to relieve the player of his contract before the start of the season if the £10 million man catches enough interest.
It is quite a fall from grace for the goalkeeper who enjoyed a successful debut season in the Premier League. He was offered improved terms to make sure he wouldn’t be leaving Southampton on the cheap.
His second season in England was plagued with injury and some say Forster has never managed to regain his old form.
If the rumours are true and Forster is ready to take a critical look at his options – Celtic MUST consider the possibility of bringing the goalkeeper back.
Speaking last year in an interview, Forster spoke of how his heart remains loyal to Glasgow – a place where he made so many memories and broke records.
A cut-price deal for the 30-year-old could be a good idea.
Craig Gordon can’t go on forever, leaving just Scott Bain as the only real option when he does hang his boot.
Getting a 30-year-old keeper who could easily play the next five-six seasons for Celtic would be a no-brainer if the price was right!
