Tottenham’s title hopes faded away after their 1-1 draw against West Brom last Monday and it also saw their star man Dele Alli get a 3-match ban following his punch to Claudio Yacob. FA charged the young midfield star with violent conduct which will see him miss Tottenham’s remaining 3 matches of the season.
Spurs are currently 7 points ahead of Leicester but are still hopeful of beating them to this season’s league title. Leicester are yet to play Manchester United and Chelsea, which must act as encouragement for Maurico Pochettino’s side to stay in the title hunt.
Spurs would have ideally hoped to see Alli be a part of their title run-in as he has been their key player with 10 goals and 9 assists this season. In Alli’s absence, Spurs would rely on Son Heung-min and Nacer Chadli to play in the 3-man attack behind Harry Kane.
Christian Eriksen will most likely revert back to his number 10 role with Chadli playing from the left wing, where he was very successful earlier in the season. While Alli has been a crucial figure for Spurs this season, Pochettino has players who can step up for the remaining 3 games.
All Tottenham can do is win their remaining games and hope for a slip-up from Leicester. Spurs play Chelsea on Monday and then have two less than challenging games to follow against Southampton and Newcastle. As for Leicester, they will take on Manchester United this Sunday, where a win could wrap up the title for them.
However, given United’s hunt for a top-4 finish this season, they would not lie down and handover the title to Claudio Ranieri’s side. Their game at Old Trafford will be followed by Everton and Chelsea, which will not be a foregone conclusion. Alli or no Alli, Tottenham need to push Leicester all the way, and hope of a slip up this weekend.
