Celtic must make a deal for former Rangers flop Kevin Mbabu this summer after it was reported that the BSC Young Boys right-back has become a transfer subject for Premier League clubs.
Sky Sports has reported that Fulham is in the race to acquire Mbabu, 23, after an impressive 217-18 season in which he aided the Young boys to achieve victory for the Swiss title for the first time in 32 years.
It is understood that Basel has had a £7 million bid for the right-back turned down. The player is valued £10 million by his club – three years after he experienced the worst season any player could have at Ibrox making no single appearance on the pitch or on the bench.
Mbabu said his goodbyes at Young Boys permanently last season and it seems that he has taken the opportunity to make a name for himself at his new club as he bagged two goals and provided eight in 44 appearances across all competitions.
And the former Switzerland Under-21s international can be a right move for Celtic this summer if Brendan Rodgers can squeeze out the necessary cash to improve his defensive line.
Last season, Celtic really had problems at the back and mainstay Mikael Lustig really struggled to live up to the expectations of fans.
Away from the Sweden international, the Bhoys also have Cristian Gamboa, who needs to be shown the exit doors as soon as possible, and Anthony Ralston, whose previous season was spent on loan with Scottish Championship club Dundee United.
Ralston is clearly not a first team material, Gamboa is clearly yet to measure up for it and Lustig is declining each season – so Rodgers needs to shop for a new right-back.
It will be a big statement for the Hoops to cough up £10 million for the right-back, but if the Glasgow desires to remain at the top of Scottish football and reach further in Europe, then they must be less frugal in splashing the cash.
