Why Arsenal should not rest their key players vs. Watford?

Arsene Wenger faces a difficult call in coming days as he has two equally important games coming up, but not enough fit players to select. Gunners take on Watford in the FA Cup Quarter Final this weekend and then play Barcelona in the Champions League knock out round next week.

According to the reports, Wenger has decided to rest his key players (Sanchez, Ozil & Welbeck) for the Watford tie and keep them fresh for the clash at Camp Nou.

This decision could have severe ramifications on Arsenal’s season as they are not expected to win vs. Barcelona despite a full-strength squad, but they could lose the game against Watford, if they are not at their best.

Watford are a dangerous side and are quite capable of upsetting Arsenal in the FA Cup. For last two seasons, Arsenal have won the FA Cup, and once again, it is their best chance to win a trophy this season.

Champions League is out of Arsenal’s reach after a 2-0 first leg defeat against the Catalans. It is time for Wenger to face the harsh reality and focus on the more possible targets this season.

FA Cup should be priority for Gunners, and players like Mesut Ozil and Danny Welbeck must start the game against Watford.

Arsenal manager is also sweating on the fitness of Gabriel and Per Mertesacker after the duo picked up injuries in the 4-0 win over Hull earlier in the week.

It will be interesting to see the fans’ reaction against Wenger this weekend after some explicit banners being displayed against their manager. During the Hull game, a banner read: “Thank you for the memories, but it is time for you to leave”.

That was indeed a strong statement from some of the fans, and if Wenger rests his key players and ends up losing against Watford, it could be all over for the Frenchman at Emirates.
