Arsenal had their scouts present in the stands to watch Boca Juniors play Bolivar last Thursday and the man in question was the 18-year old sensation Rodrigo Bentancur.
According to reports from ESPN, Gunners are keen on tying a deal for the skillful midfielder after falling behind this season. Arsenal will face competition from Real Madrid and Juventus for Bentancur’s signature.
Manager Arsene Wenger was criticized for not signing an outfield player last summer and by the time he bought Mohamed Elneny, Gunners had lost ground to Leicester and Tottenham.
That has prompted Wenger to work on his summer targets beforehand and so far Bentancur has been the name most linked with a move to Emirates next summer. The Uruguayan midfielder is best known for his combative abilities from central midfield and is good on the ball as well.
According to ESPN, Arsenal are in advance talks with Boca Juniors who are keen to keep hold of their starlet for at least one more season. Argentine giants are deliberating on the prospects of selling Bentancur to Arsenal and immediately recalling him on loan for next season.
However, Arsenal want the player to join their squad in the summer and continue his developments back at The Emirates. The negotiations are expected to drag long in to the summer before we see a conclusion to Rodrigo Bentancurt to Arsenal rumours.
Are Arsenal right in targeting Rodrigo Bentancur?
Arsene Wenger is going through the worst time of his Arsenal career and perhaps now is the time to think about club’s immediate future rather than planning far too ahead. Rodrigo Bentancur may be a real talent but he will not lead Arsenal’s title charge in near future.
Contrary to that, Arsenal need some match winners in their squad next season. For once, Wenger must go by the books rather than maintaining books for the club and splash the cash on summer transfer.
